Laghman Province, Afghanistan (April 25, 2013) Cavalry scout pilots of the 11th Air Assault Division went back to the 18th century and reintroduced the Stetson hat as a "knight cap". The Stetson is not an issued item, nor is it subject to any uniform regulations, but is currently worn by cavalry soldiers at ceremonies and special events.

The cavalier hat of U.S. Lieutenant Colonel William Nuckols, a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is seen with an American flag next to his hat in his office at Gambery Forward Operating Base next to a white and burgundy University of Alabama flag.

Nuckols served as chief of staff and deputy brigade commander for Tactical Operations Center 1 with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. He was also an advisor to the 201st Army and the brigadier general's chief of staff. General Abdul Malik.

For this consulting mission, soldiers and leaders of the Long Sword Squad of the First Support Force were specially selected and trained.

This is Nuckol's fourth deployment, but not his first as a consultant. He commanded a military transition team in Iraq, advising the commander of the Iraqi 9th Division.

"Before we deployed, we knew our mission was to advise the Afghans and the police in some capacity," Nuckols said. "After arriving at FOB Gamberi, I was informed that I would also be the Chief of Staff of TAC-1."

As TAC-1's chief of staff and SFAB's second-in-command, Nuckols' duties included assisting TAC-1's senior advisor, Brig. Gen. Ronald Lewis, deputy commander in chief of the 101st Airlift Support Division, leads a team of advisors that help SFAB provide combat support to ANA air bases.

“We deliver effects as needed; rotor support, Air Force aviation support, intelligence and other enablers, etc.,” Nuckols said.

The role of consulting and assisting can be challenging at times, Nuckols said, but his assignment in Laghman province has gone well.

“The [4th BCT, 1st Knight Division] Brigade did well because it had an outstanding leader,” Nuckols said. "The brigade is highly disciplined and very competent. They have done a great job of taking ANA and the Afghan Police to a new level of professionalism so that when we leave, they are fully self-sufficient."

Nuckols has worn various forms of uniform since 1986 and has served in ROTC, National Guard and Regular Army. In May 1990, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Armored Forces as a distinguished military graduate. Nuckols graduated from the University of Alabama in July 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. He entered active duty in the United States in 1992.

Nuckols works as a consultant at FOB Gamberi and spends a few hours a week with his counterpart, Brig. General Malik. Nuckols said Malik was a very competent officer and a pleasure to work with, which made the consulting part easy.

Advisers play an important role in supporting the 201st Corps by advising and assisting in everything from aviation, training, command and control and combat training exercises, Malik said.

"Our primary goal, and that of our counterparts, is to increase the capabilities and operational capabilities of the 201st Corps in all areas," Malik said.

"From the boots, to the uniform, to the coordinated operations, it's all planned and executed by the 201st Corps," Malik said, pointing to his shiny black combat boots.

The general said he was lucky to have Nuckols as a mentor. They all fought the same enemy and had the same goals, Malik said.

The ANA chief of staff said Nukors was a man of good character and hoped he would one day be promoted to admiral.

"He's been a very good leader, a very solid officer and a very smart officer for America ... I'm very proud of him," Malik said.

Nuckols said his favorite part of the job is working with young soldiers and junior officers, but he doesn't do that very often.

"This generation is very team-oriented, which is a little bit different than my generation," he said. "They make us and break us; they decide whether we will succeed."

In his view, he said the strength of family is, adding that his implementation has made his relationship with his family stronger.

"The things that made me who I am; my family, my love for my state and my love for the University of Alabama," he said.

He and his wife, Julie, are both graduates of the University of Alabama. They met as students and married in 1990.
